Only 10 Pounds…Part 1

Well, here I go…

I have had this idea in my head a while and now I am attempted to take it to fruition. Let’s see how many can relate to this.

Now, first of all, people who know me and others who look at me would probably say to themselves,

“Just 10 pounds? She thinks she ONLY needs to lose 10 pounds? I think she needs to lose a lot more than that! Who is she kidding? Herself, that’s who?” Great conversation from a stranger’s point of view but I’ve played out many conversations in my head throughout the years and on many topics. Unfortunately, there is more than 10 pounds needed off my above average frame. Above average is like extra-large but sounds better and nicer.

Apparently, while I wasn’t looking because I was busy working full-time and trying to figure how to be a single mom and somewhere in there also trying to be a grown up, I hit middle age. At least my body did. In my head I am still in my 30s. I’m sure a lot of you can relate to that concept. When did we get old? In my head, I feel like I just graduated college and have my whole life ahead of me, but then in that dreaded mirror, reality sets in. And middle age is not kind to a body that was flawed to begin with. So…I begin this
new journey.

What I am trying to do here and with your help and support, which will hopefully be more than just one person (Hi, Tina), is to start a blog about this new journey to health and wellness, among other topics.

Now, again, people who know me, or look at me, that’s not the first image that comes to mind. I am flawed in that way too, but I think that is a part of this, I am not a 25-year-old, energetic, size 2 advertising the
latest fitness craze. I am double that age (plus 1), mostly low energy bordering on lazy/tired, and definitely not a size 2 (I can’t even imagine what that is like). But I never was, a size 2 that is. I’ve always been thick, solid and sturdy. I always figured that I came from peasant stock.

But this is like a social experiment. I want to use my audience (hoping I get one) to help me to stay accountable, motivated, and on track. If I must post my results, I’ll be more diligent. It’s easier to lie to
yourself that you will keep the New Year’s Resolutions or start a diet, than it is to lie to strangers, especially in this social media crazed day and age.

And also, I want to try and figure out how to live healthier. Again, that is not usually the way I think, but the way I’ve been thinking has gotten me to this point in my life, now, hasn’t it? Plus, I am thinking (yet
again) that some of these aches and pains (and there are many of them) would be helped by this too. I plan on researching different avenues and maybe, just maybe, I find something that will work for me and maybe others, as well. Plus, I don’t know if these medications that a lot of us are taking are making us
like this also. But I know, I am too young to feel this damn old to quote a Garth Brooks song.

So, while some people might look at me and wonder what I am thinking with “Only 10 Pounds”, I am hoping that it becomes a starting point. I have been stuck a very long time and if I could lose “Only 10 pounds”, well then, the world is my oyster and the sky could be the limit because it would be
a start. And that is what I really need, a starting point. So, stick with me and let’s see what I am capable of…

And how about you? Would losing only 10 pounds get you started on your fitness goals? Does it seem impossible at times and you want to give up?

Stick with me and let’s see if we can both meet our goals. What have you got to lose, right?

Congrats on this journey to weight loss and the task of blogging about it. You can do it! Looking forward to following your progress.

    1. Susan

I hope I can do it. It seems overwhelming at times. Thanks for the support though.

Good luck on your journey! I’ve just gone through a recent Dr. assisted weight-loss program, and you guessed it, I lost 10 lbs. I’ve been stuck there for months. Hopefully, you will learn some things that I haven’t and will share them with your followers. Accountability is a great motivator!

    1. Susan

I hope that accountability is a great motivator. I need all I can get. I started the working out and haven’t seen any progress but have to figure out the food part. My age is not helping either. It’s so much harder. I hope you get off your plateau and are able to accomplish your goal, no matter what it is! Good luck!

I’d love to lose 10 pounds! Ten pounds is a more attainable goal than a larger number. However, it’s still hard….Counting calories is what worked for me in the past. I look forward to learning what works for you once you lose those first 10 pounds.

    1. Susan

I would love to lose only 10 too. That is just my way to not freak out the rest of me about how much I need to lose. I just need a start. Those first 10 will spur me on to do the next 10 and the next and the next. It’s actually a lot if I think about it, but then I would say I wouldn’t be able to do it and just give up. So, a little psychology on myself for now. But, 10 pounds would help to maybe see my face look thinner or help the muffin top that is overflowing. Counting calories is one of my things I need to focus on, what each little thing is full of, some more so than others. I’ve been working on proteins too, like in the morning with two hard-boiled eggs and a banana. I started that instead of toast or English muffin. I think it just becomes a constant thing with us as we get older too.

Setting goals is definitely the right thing to do!!!! And manageable goals is the key. There are times when some try shooting for the moon right out of the gate and end up not even getting out of their house 😊 You are so worth the effort! One day at a time. Good luck. I can’t wait to follow you on this journey.

    1. Susan

Thank you and I hope I am worthy of the follow. I am getting good with the regular walking at the gym. Although, I may need to add a fourth day regularly. I am also working on yoga at home. The food is the hard part. I’ve been seeing lots of gimmicks lately but I need to try to replace some of my bad habits and use more healthy alternatives. I hope to learn a lot along the way and maybe spread the info around. I think a lot of us have this problem as we age too.

Susan, I love your transparency…and your mindset. I became a health coach several years ago because I struggled with my weight for a good majority of my adult life. Once I started figuring out how to help myself I decided to share what I was learning to help my clients. “Tricking myself” is one of the ways I figured out how to do this. I’ve had people come to me saying they want to lose 30, 40, 60, 100 lbs…and I always say “how about we start with the first 10. You’re awesome and I wish you amazing success on your journey. I can’t wait to see those amazing reports start pouring in.

    1. Susan

Thank you. Did the tricking the brain work for you? I hope it does for me. I need to do some better swaps too to save calories. Did it work with your clients too. I’ll have to check out your website and see your process. I’m still working on the first 10. I gained a few at the holidays and getting those slowly off. I have been good with the walking at least. I feel it’s a little victory, hopefully leading to more victories.

I am so totally with you. I am 54 and up until 51 I was a size 2 (though I had been heavy during my mid-twenties), I was coasting along, very high energy, a sort of athlete and then boom. Adrenal fatigue, weight gain, low energy. I am at my heaviest weight since 2008. It is very disheartening but I am a fighter and I like your “Only 10 pounds” mindset. Take it small and focus. You will get there just as I will. It will take us longer as we come to terms with hormones, but please never call yourself old. We are not old and you don’t have to “be old” just because you are in your fifties.

    1. Susan

A size 2?? What was that like? I’m sure it was nice. I think menopause didn’t help me either. I usually say Older vs. old but it does change your body and your ability to rebound, in weight too. Also, in bouncing back with injuries, etc. I hope you are able to reach your goals too. Mine is not being a size 2, but a 12 or 14 would be nice and reasonable for me. I went to your website but I didn’t see a place to subscribe. I need more menopause info. I’ve been having symptoms that I’ve been researching too. Ugh!

  7. Sally

I’m celebrating your 10 lb weight loss success! I know exactly what you’re facing…I’m also middle aged, and had packed on a solid 35 lbs in a little over a year when I turned 50. I carried all that extra weight around for about 7 years until I finally went low carb last February. I’m happy to report I’ve lost 36 lbs…and am now maintaining. Not sure if I should lose more because of that old lady skin (another issue we could talk about)… so for now, I’m just kind of holding on. Good luck, and I’m excited to go on this journey with you! I hope you check out my site…I have some low-carb recipes you might like to try out!

    1. Susan

Unfortunately, I haven’t hit the 10 pound loss yet. I’m working on the hard part, the food. I used to be able to skip a few meals and lose a few pounds but not now. I have been good about going to the gym three times a week but I think I need to add a fourth day as well. I’ve never been small but I know there is an amount I need to get off. I am looking forward to seeing what those first 10 pounds will do, especially my face. That could use some losing. That is great that you lost 36 pounds. Good for you! I ended up gaining some over the holidays and when I saw that, I was disappointed but trying to do some swaps for foods to try and cut down. Over 50, it’s harder. And of course, I want to maintain when I do lose some. I will check out your site for those recipes. At least for tonight I just had a great salad for dinner with lots of vegeys. I need to up those for nutrients anyway, might as well put them in the salad, right? Here’s hoping.

  8. Brianna

Definitely seems that it could take forever but then I found my program that I am a coach for called Optavia and my life has not been the same!

    1. Susan

Yes, it does take time. Glad you found something that worked for you. That’s great for you.
