Fresh Start

I did it! Yes, I did it! I walked! Yay!

Did that excite you? Probably not as much as it excited me. And why? because it’s me and not you, of course.

I took the first steps, literally and figuratively.

Last week, I made a goal to walk three times throughout the week on a treadmill for at least a mile or twenty minutes. I was walking about 3.1 or 3.2 mph so I did hit the goal of a mile. Three times!

Now, I have not been so good about being consistent with my exercise regimen. Actually, I have not even had a regimen in a long time. But I figured that this is the perfect time to start.

This week, the goal increased. My goal this week is to walk three times throughout the week for 25 minutes each time. And I succeeded for this week too. My first session ended up with 1.3 miles walked with an average 3.1 mph. Unfortunately, the worst part of those statistics is that I burned only 100 calories.

100 calories? That’s it? That is the equivalent of the number of calories in a fun size Snickers bar, or other candy bars too, but I do love those fun sized Snickers. It’s also Halloween today, as I write this new blog post. That might be why I used that for a reference.

My goal with this blog is to lose weight and also to get into shape and out of the round shape that I’ve been in for too long. 😊

Man, those 40s…gravity starts taking a toll on our bodies and other woman things that contribute to the new shape! Ugh!

I think a lot of you can commiserate with me on this, right? I do not know when things started shifting. I have always been overweight but the weight has not changed in the past 5-6 years but the body did… things shifting around.

Now, is the time for me to figure out how to shift some things back.

Another one of my goals…figure out this exercise stuff to the point that I can do it successfully. If you have seen any infomercials on health or fitness products, they all promise to get you a new body. It looks easy enough…for them! And even with the testimonials, I am skeptic.

I have bought several over the years myself. I want to believe, I really do. But the reality is, there is a more of me than I would like, and I can’t see myself exercising every day for 45-60 minutes along with the DVDs or streaming videos. Could you exercise for that long every single day? If you can, you probably cannot relate to a lot of what I am saying.

But, I think there are more people out there who are like me: getting older, gaining weight, more sedentary, like to eat food and getting to the point where the struggle is REAL.

What to do?

Baby steps…which is why I am walking.

I can usually walk without too much knee pain. Steps, inclines and bicycle motions put too much stress on my knees. I am going to work on myself, getting more exercise and trying different methods and reporting back to you, my audience, to let you know what I found out. I am going to take pictures of myself along the way, as well, to see if there are any changes from week to week. I think that would be a good starting point. To show a real person, an average person, trying to accomplish this goal.

I am also very afraid that I will not be able to do this, but for now I will try. It will not be easy, and I am starting with moving more first.

Then, I will try to incorporate food into the equation.

Oh food, I do love you too. That will be harder. I am sure there are a lot of people out there that know how hard that is to fix.

So, come along with me on this journey.

Tell me what has worked for you. What has not worked?

Let us go along together on this journey. I started this blog for that purpose. We can support each other and cheer each other on.

I may know you personally, or I may not know you personally, but with this internet phenomenon, we still can support each other and maybe, just maybe, be able to reach a goal…together.

Great idea. Walking is very good exercise. I think that starting small and working your way up to more is a good way to not burn out and quit. If you stick with it, you will create a great new habit. Thank you for inspiring the rest of us to get off the couch!

Thanks, it is a struggle every day though. Wish I liked it more. I need my music to help me through it too. But I am sticking with it more than I have in years before.
