Dinner? Dessert? Dinner? Dessert? What to have first?

Sometimes, you just must have the dessert for dinner. Has anyone else ever done this? Just have ice cream for dinner, for instance. We have done this once or twice.

In this recent case, I had bought pizza dough to make pizza for dinner. I keep trying to make pizza at home that is as good as the local pizzerias, but it really is a mediocre imitation. It is okay but not as good as when you get it from the 500-degree pizza ovens.  But I try and try again, especially when the dough is only $1.00 on sale.

My daughter loves fried dough but who doesn’t, right? Yes, I realize there are people who don’t. It was just an expression.

Usually the only time we are able to get fried dough is at the state fair so it is not something we eat every week. One time I took off some of the dough from the pizza dough I was using to make a pizza and made some fried dough with it. Another time, feeling guilty about the unhealthy fried dough in all the oil, I experimented with a baked version. It was a churro recipe I used off the internet. It was good and I felt that it was not as unhealthy than the deep-fried version.

But this time, I was not feeling like pizza and my child had just had it for lunch (leftovers) so she convinced me (figuratively twisted my arm) to make fried dough. I skipped making the pizza and just made the fried dough. It is not really that hard to make.

I heated up the oil in a pan until hot. I took out the sugar and cinnamon and mixed it up in a brown lunch bag so it would be ready when the dough was ready. I dropped pieces of dough into the hot oil and turned them over when they were ready. Then, I dropped them into the brown lunch bag with the cinnamon sugar and transferred them into another container after they were coated with sugar.

It worked! They were good and I ate some for dinner. Yes, it was not the food pyramid kind of dinner that I definitely should be eating. But, occasionally, you just have to do things a little differently, I guess.

*On a side note, I am originally a Long Islander and grew up going to the St. Anthony’s Feast every summer and standing on line waiting to buy zeppolis. It was always the longest line and they always ran out of dough. They gave them to you in a brown lunch bag that had the confectioner’s sugar in it. The bag was warm and greasy. You ate your zeppolis, head stretched out so the confectioner’s sugar did not leave a telling sign all over your clothes. Oh, so good!

How about you? Do you skip the healthy dinner sometimes and just eat dessert instead? Comment below and let me know what you do?

    Hey hey!
Oh yes, once in a while I make dessert for dinner. Especially crepes, back in Europe that is not unusual.
I always say..we live once…why not live it?

I thought I had responded to this, but I guess I didn’t. Sorry, still get used to this. Crepes sounds fancy, but like a pancake so not as bad, maybe? As long as it’s not every day, right? Moderation? Of course, that’s been a problem for me, but I’m working on it.

They are like fried dough but in smaller pieces so you know what it would taste like. But so greasy and sugary. Yum! Of course, not something you want to eat every day. I tried the baked one, but not the same. Again, moderation, State Fair occasionally, right?
